Emergency medicine is the medical specialty involving care for undifferentiated and unscheduled patients with illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention. In their role as first-line providers, emergency physicians are responsible for initiating investigations and interventions to diagnose and/or treat patients in the acute phase (including initial resuscitation and stabilization), coordinating care with physicians from other specialties, and making decisions regarding a patient's need for hospital admission, observation, or discharge. Examples of life-threatening emergencies include:

  • Alcohol poisoning
  • Chest pain
  • Shock
  • Poisonings
  • Unconsciousness
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • Serious injuries or burns
  • Attempted suicides such as hanging

The emergency physician requires a broad field of knowledge and advanced procedural skills often including surgical procedures, trauma resuscitation, advanced cardiac life support and advanced airway management. They must have the skills of many specialists - the ability to resuscitate a patient (critical care medicine), manage a difficult airway (anesthesia), suture a complex laceration (plastic surgery), reduce (set) a fractured bone or dislocated joint (orthopedic surgery), treat a heart attack (cardiology), manage strokes (neurology), work-up a pregnant patient with vaginal bleeding (obstetrics and gynecology), stop a severe nosebleed (ENT), place a chest tube (cardiothoracic surgery), and to conduct and interpret x-rays and ultrasounds (radiology).

The emergency department is a medical treatment facility specializing in emergency medicine, the acute care of patients who present without prior appointment; either by their own means or by that of an ambulance. The emergency department is usually found in a hospital or other primary care center.

The emergency department at SJM Hospital operates 24 hours a day and has minimal wait times. Supporting the emergency department are three well-equipped operation theatres, an intensive care unit (ICU), a pediatric ICU and a neonatal ICU, and the equipment and expertise to provide acute care. Some of the facilities in our emergency room include:

  • Emergency Team - ICU trained doctors, ICU-trained nurses and paramedical staff, ward staff to shift cervical / spinal injury patients.
  • Defibrillator - used in case of sudden cardiac arrest to revive cardiac functions.
  • Cardiac Monitor - to monitor blood pressure, pulse and cardiac functions.
  • Oxygen Supply - each bed has round the clock oxygen supply.
  • Ambulance - available on call.
