Clinical Laboratory and Pathology

A clinical laboratory is a laboratory where tests are usually done on clinical specimens in order to obtain information about the health of a patient as pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Clinical laboratories are thus focused on applied science mainly on a production-like basis, as opposed to research laboratories that focus on basic science on an academic basis. Some fields of laboratory medicine are chemistry, cytology, hematology, histology, and pathology. Clinical Pathology typically includes:

  • Clinical Microbiology: Microbiology receives almost any clinical specimen, including swabs, feces, urine, blood, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, as well as possible infected tissue. The work here is to look for suspected pathogens. Results are reported with the identified organism(s) and the type and amount of drug(s) that should be prescribed for the patient.
  • Clinical Chemistry: analysis of blood components, enzymology, toxicology and endocrinology.
  • Hematology: works with whole blood to do full blood counts, and blood films as well as many other specialized tests
  • Genetics mainly performs DNA analysis
  • Reproductive biology: Semen analysis, Sperm bank and assisted reproductive technology.

SJM Hospital provides several laboratory medicine services including histopathology, cytopathology, clinical microbiology, hematology, serology, biochemistry and molecular biology. Our well-equipped and staffed laboratory supports all our other patient care services – outpatient, inpatient and emergency. Some commonly used services at the SJM Hospital laboratory include:

  • Histopathology - solid tissue removed from the body (biopsies) for evaluation at the microscopic level.
  • Cytopathology - examine smears of cells from all over the body (such as from the cervix) for evidence of inflammation, cancer, and other conditions.
  • Hematology - full blood counts, and blood films as well as many other specialized test
  • Microbiology - look for suspected pathogens in clinical specimens
  • Serology - examination of blood serum, especially with regard to the response of the immune system to pathogens or introduced substances.
  • Biochemistry - usually works on serum or plasma. They test the serum for chemicals present in blood. These include a wide array of substances, such as lipids, blood sugar, enzymes, and hormones.
